Olivier Rousteing of Balmain

Not many designers are able to say they were in control of a leading fashion brand by the time they were 25. Now, at the age of 27 Olivier Rousteing is still producing inspirational designs each season.

This season, Rousteing has brought back the padded shoulders for 80s style glamour. Shiny statement tops hugged with chunky gold belts all scream retro powerhouse and really exaggerates the hour glass figure. Of Course Olivier Rousteing keeps the trade mark rock chick look flowing with slicked back hair and plain make-up whist adding a slight touch of sophistication with a nod to the age old brands classic luxurious history.

Rousteing has been developing the Balmain look since the 26th of April 2011 where he was appointed Creative Director of the Men’s and Women’s Ready-To-Wear collections. All seasons have been successfully approved by the fashion world and he has even attracted the likes of Rihanna. The look seems to be aimed at a younger audience due to the short skirts and low cut tops but seems to even attract some older audiences. Since taking on the job, sales boosted to up to 75% according to the Wall Street Journal.

Rousteing has been in charge of the women’s wear design studio at Balmain since 2009 before taking over from previous creative director, Christophe Decarin where he has helped transformed the brand.

When Decarin took hold of the brand he shook up the fashion world by completely transforming the brand with rock and roll elements of ripped jeans and torn tees. Although making an impression and gaining a number of followers, the designer quickly left which was rumoured to be suffering with mental problems. Rousteing was quickly appointed and he decided to bring back the days of Pierre Balmain and incorporate more couture.

Olivier was born in France and raised in Bordeaux. He left home after his parents had mapped out a career in law for him. He ventured to Italy where he worked at Roberto cavalla for five years and was eventually promoted to the position of designer for the women’s and men’s ready to wear collections.

His fashion education was from when he studied at Ecole Superieure Des Ar ts Et Techniques De La Mode and then graduated in 2003. Since then, Rousteing has shooted to the top of the fashion ladder with impeccable speed and never fails to impress.
